Definition of Water Mist System (NFPA 750)

     A distribution system connected to a water supply or water and atomizing media supplies, that is equipped with one or more nozzles capable of delivering water mist intended to control, suppress, or extinguish fires and that has been demonstrated to meet the performance requirements of its listing and this standard.

     A water spray for which the Dv0.99 for the flow-weighted cumulative volumetric distribution of water droplets, is less than 1000 microns at the minimum design operating pressure of the water mist nozzle.

     [99% of the water droplets size discharged from the water mist nozzle at its minimum design pressure is less than 1000 micron in diameter.] ( 1000 microns = 1mm )

Water Mist Application (NFPA 750)

Water mist systems have been proven effective in controlling, suppressing or extinguishing many types of fires. Potential applications include the following:.

  • Gas jet fire.
  • Flammable and combustible liquids.
  • Hazardous solids, including fires involving foam furnishings.
  • Protection of aircraft occupants from an external pool fire long enough to provide time to escape

Determinants of the performance of a water mist system:

  • Higher pressure to atomize droplets to finest, to increase cooling surface area coverage for same amount of water consumed.
  • Quicken the Vaporization process to create inerting effect (steam)
  • Permeability of mist droplets – Water mist is able to extinguish shielded & concealed fire because they are very light and are able to suspend long enough in the air & entrained in the air to be drawn into shielded & concealed fire by means of air movement created by the fire itself.
